Boca 31 is a very unassuming little restaurant featuring Latin street food in the Keller Town Center, and while it may be a small location, they serve up big flavors with every item.
I highly recommend starting your meal with an order of Mofongo Fritters. A bit of a twist on a traditional Puerto Rican dish that features fried plantain that are then mashed and mixed with broth or oil and a few seasonings. In this version, this mixture is deep fried into fritters and served with both a tomatillo and what tasted like an avocado cream sauce. Both sauces were quite good, and each added something different to the Mofongo. The cream brought out the sweetness in the Plantains, while the green sauce enhanced a savory quality. I ultimately decided that a little of each sauce together was the way to go.
Of their entrees, the street tacos are very popular, and look great. They also offer a selection of empanadas, sandwiches and rice bowls, but I really wanted to see the “mega burrito”. Many Latin and Tex-Mex restaurants offer a “super burrito” of some name, but they’re all usually very similar. This Mega Burrito delivers on its name! It’s HUGE! So large that it dwarfed my can of soda that was sitting beside it. This is for the big appetite, and it’s not just stuffed with filler.
The Mega Burrito is as flavorful as it is huge. I chose ground beef as my protein, which was plentiful, along with rice, pickled onions, refried beans, and great seasoning. After a couple of bites, I gave up on eating it with my hands, and broke out the knife and fork. Still, I had to leave a lot of the tortilla in favor of enjoying all of the delicious filling. I also wanted to save a little room for dessert!
Finally, we tried the guava & cream cheese empanadas. I was surprised to find the guava and cream cheese were blended, which really created a nice creaminess. The empanada was light, but still held together well, and included a light dusting of powdered sugar. A nice, sweet finish to the meal.
I really want to come back for the tacos, but if you’re a burrito lover, and have a big appetite, try the mega burrito at Boca 31.
